In the ever-evolving world of Starfighter design, the varied TIE line of fighters has remained a constant dominating force in the Galaxy for decades. In the age of the Empire, The TIE Interceptor was developed only for the most talented and aggressive pilots. During the rise of the First Order, this legacy continued with the modified and improved TIE Whisper. On-screen we only get to see Klyo Ren pilot one straight into the ground, but based on all available data, this ship could very well be one of the best dogfighters ever built.

This model can seat a minifigure pilot and has a strong display stand design.

TIE Silencer vs. TIE Whisper weapons rant:

According to official sources, The TIE Silencer has 6 laser cannons while the TIE Whisper has at least 12, but most likely 14 laser cannons. This on its face didn’t sound right to me, so I decided to dig a little deeper. In the cross sections book outlining the TIE Silencer, the largest area inside the wide body of the ship is dedicated to power cells, the description reads “High-volume power cells for advanced laser cannons”. Both ships have a shield generator, stealth tech, and a hyperdrive, yet the Silencer needs all the extra power cells just to operate less than half the weaponry? It’s possible the Silencer laser cannons were much more powerful than that of a Whisper, though there isn’t any indication of this in the descriptions aside from them saying “advanced laser cannons” that can point in this direction. Also side note the Whisper lasers look like they are red now based on the inner glow you see in the film, which would be a big departure to the TIE line, but this isn’t confirmed.

Theory: The person in charge of writing the info out about the Whisper in the cross sections book (the only source for its number of laser cannons that I can find) was given the wrong info or guessed that the sensors on the split wings of the Whisper were also cannons when they weren’t. It’s an easy mistake to make with such a complex and fast-moving production.

Evidence? Nothing concrete, just some suspicious details. Why would the split wings of both ships have nearly identical looking instruments, but serve different functions? Zooming in on the closest screenshots from either film, even some of the basic greebles that surround the split wings weapons system are nearly identical. Did the engineers hollow out the tubes of the weapons sensors and turn them into laser barrels or something? Also the time gap between Episode 8 and 9 is about a year. Did the most advanced prototype of the First Order (The Silencer), no longer need its targeting sensors? Does the whisper have more powerful weapons sensors that are also completely hidden?

Even the original Imperial TIE Interceptor had two protruding sensors in this same area. This shows that the TIE Silencer prototype was building on the original Interceptor design. I really think someone at ILM just glanced at the TIE Whisper and saw pointy things, counted them, and wrote it down without checking the existing lore functions of previous iterations.

It looks like they were rushed when they made that cross-sections page as well. They used (what I think is) an outdated image of the TIE Whisper just above a screenshot from the film. The solar collectors are all black here, just like the Silencer, but are gray in the film image below.
If an “incorrect” image made it through to the final book, I think it’s possible some incorrect/ guesstimate info made it through as well.

I have no proof. Official cannonized material asserts there are 5 laser cannons on each wings of the Whisper, but I simply think it’s an honest mistake.

Did reading this improve your day? Did I miss something here?
